How it’s calculated

Tip = bill × tip %. Each share = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people. When rounding up, each share goes up to the next whole amount and the tip grows by the difference.

How much to tip

Tipping customs vary by country, region and type of service, so treat these as common US guidelines, not rules:

  • Sit-down restaurants: commonly 15% to 20% of the bill, more for great service.
  • Bars: often $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% to 20% of the tab.
  • Food delivery: often 10% to 20%, with a few dollars as a minimum for small orders.
  • Hairdressers and other personal services: commonly 15% to 20%.

Outside the US, a service charge is often already included in the bill, and in some countries tipping isn’t expected. Check the bill and local customs before you add a tip.

Quick ways to tip in your head

  • 10%: move the decimal point one place left. On $47.80 that’s $4.78.
  • 20%: double the 10% figure: $9.56.
  • 15%: take 10% and add half of it: $4.78 + $2.39 = $7.17.

For any other percentage, our percentage calculator does the math.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Many etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the total is common too. Enter whichever amount you prefer.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

Work out each person’s items first, then add the same tip percentage to each subtotal. The calculator is best for splitting evenly.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not always. Some restaurants add a service charge that may or may not go to the staff. If you’re unsure, ask, and adjust your tip if service is already included.

How do I tip when traveling?

Customs differ widely between countries. Check whether service is included, and use our currency converter to see what the bill costs in your own currency.
